Hi guys, I know it's been awhile....and believe me..I've missed reading and writing ALOT....but I've freed up some of my time and can get back to it.....in the interim I FINALLY completed a manuscript and have it ALMOST ready for submission...(i think) but I am so clueless about writing query letters.....I made an attempt to do so back about a year ago and it failed miserably. Tail tucked between my legs I vowed to get a little more information before I attempted to write another one. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, and a grape nehi party at my house on the day of acceptance:-)

more to come in the forums very very soon
Happy New Year!!!

Montie,

Congratulations on the perseverence necessary to write a full-length manuscript.

If you share with us the nature of the work and your current "writer's resume," we can more effectively advise you on a cover letter.

Best,

Fred

lol good question fred...my writer's resume is limited...what sort of information is needed?
now you see why i failed miserably...lol

the nature of my work is a collection centered around a life-theme...a journey, if you will, from birth to the hereafter...progressing through childhood and into relationships..etc...
does that help?

Montie--is it a poetry collection, a prose collection, or a novel? The query process for each is quite different.

best,

Dear Montie -- for information about writing query letters (and a whole lot more), we highly recommend "The Writer's Market: 2007" and "The Poet's Market: 2007," both published by Writers' Digest. They're invaluable reference tools and resources. You can find them here at Wild in the WPF Bookshop down near the bottom of the page.

Hope this helps and much good luck in finding a publisher interested in your manuscript.

Love,
M

I don't query. I insist.

EXAMPLE LETTER:

Dear Editor,

Enclosed is a copy of my new volume of poetry Lyrical Inspirations. I put a great amount of blood, sweat and tears into these poems!

And, while we're on the subject of blood, sweat and tears, you may have heard of my cousins, Gino and Marcello, sometimes known as "the poetry goons."

I was yakking with them yesterday, and they told me that it would be real nice if you published 1000 free copies of Lyrical Inspirations perfect bound on the highest quality paper stock with a beautiful glossy cover including a drawing by an artist with an international reputation.

They said that if you had a different opinion that they'd come on over and have a little talk.

So, thanks in advance. I'll expect the finished books next week.

Yours in Art!

Montie remember the poetry competitions that are actively looking for colleections of poems of a standard to publish. Also go into a really good bookshop and look in the poetry section, see which publishers publish your type/style of poetry.
Best wishes Zephyr

Dear Editor,
RE: JOURNEYS

"What is human life? The first third a good time, the rest remembering about it"-Mark Twain
In my 40-page collection called "Journeys," one is allowed to explore life in vivid detail. The simplicity of an unborn child, the complexity of relationships, the finality of the afterlife, all of life is a journey. I humbly invite you to share in mine.
I am a freelance writer, having been published in "War and Peace and Everything In Between" (“The Medal”-Summer 2006 supplemental). I am a member of "Wild Poetry Forum", and have attended numerous creative writing workshops over the years. I have a distinct passion for writing about life, love and the world in its beauty.
Enclosed is a SASE for your convenience.
Warmest Regards,
