Hi everyone: We are at Desert Moon Review will be shortly having a discussion of the April Translations issue of Poetry Magazine, with translations by Heaney, Wilbur, Merwin and others. I have just received the shipment of copies of the mag. Anyone who wants to join in the discussion, there is still time to get a copy, and I have a bunch of 'em that will go to waste if you don't grab 'em. If you are interested, send your snail mail address to me at chrisdonna@comcast.net. Offer good while supplies last. Chris George

Hi everyone I still have copies of the April issue of Poetry magazine for anyone to discuss who still wants a copy. I think a number of you will have already received your copies. Known as "The Translation Issue" the issue contains translations by Richard Wilbur, Seamus Heaney, W.S. Merwin and others. It should be fun! For a free issue, there is still time to send your snail mail address to me at chrisdonna@comcast.net if you are willing to discuss one or more poems in the issue in this section as part of our Book Club. I suggest we begin discussing the issue next week, the week of April 17. All the best Chris George

Chris, Got the copy of Poetry in the mail today. Many thanks. Interestingly enough, I also have translations of the same Brecht and Rilke poems that are in this magazine and would be happy to share and compare/contrast mine to these. I believe it will bring up the fundamental question in translations-- how much deviation should there be from the original, and what is the difference between a translation and a version. Jim, a very good question. Sam Hamill has some interesting thoughts on the subject re Basho's frog. I've studied Li Po's Question and Answer in the Mountains and have found several variations for the color of the forest. Sam's being the most variant. And if you Le Guin's and Hamill's translations of the Tao e Ching, you might not see they are the same work. When I was writing the Wang Wei, I found one that translates as Wingceltis goldenrain shine empty bend Fresh and green ripple ripples ripples Secret enter Shang hill road Woodcutter not able know Wingceltis is a tree used to make fine paper when mixed with rice straw. They are often hollow and when old are venerated. Goldenrain is a large yellow flower often called Chinese lantern. but in most English versions is rendered as "bamboo." And that is irritating. BTW, not enough East Asia in the Poetry volume, but worth the read none-the-less. Smiles. Gary

Hi Jim & Gary Glad to know you both received the issue. Jim, such a discussion of the art of translation and how different translators can come up with markedly differing poems would be most interesting and I encourage you to start that discussion. We thought we might start discussing the issue on Monday. All the best Chris
