Harbrace College Handbook: Twelfth Edition
:
"A
gerund
is a verbal (nonfinite verb) that ends in
-ing
and functions as a noun. Gerunds may take objects, complements, or modifiers.
Riding bikes
is good exercise. The gerund phrase --
riding
and its object,
bikes
-- serves as the subject of the sentence."
