Dear Poetry Fans,

Poetry & Poets in Rags

Ever heard of regm? I swear it must be a concept that I had heard of before, and somehow forgot. Or maybe that's not right, maybe I had it all in the wrong perspective, or something. Maybe it's none of that. Maybe it's the reality of it, like when I read of that African woman who was going to be stoned after her baby was born and could be evidence of her adultery. It was Monday, and I click into a story, and I am floored like that. She's an Iranian poet. I reel and say to myself, that's the headliner. That's sometimes how the headliner decision comes, from the reeling. Nothing knocked it off the top today, not the petition to released a tortured and aging poet, not the excellent article on Schiller, not any of the articles with excellent poetry and critique in them. I don't know how to say "regm" but it is unfortunately still alive and well in Iran. Regm unfortunately reigns.

Obituaries came in all week, one after another. Poets dying, seems like at least twice as much as in any other week of the two years of P&P in Rags. A cluster of poets from all over the world die, and we end this week's issue with a special 6-obit section called, "An Obituary Cluster".

Yours,
Rus
