Can anyone recommend a good location to start a personal blog? I don't have my own web page anymore and was thinking about a place to park some stuff in the ether. Haven't done blog pages before. Ta. Cheers, Frank | ||

well, I suspect we are all prejudiced toward our own sites; I've had a relatively hassle-free time with Blogger, run by Google. It's easy to set up, and I suspect if you know html you can futz with the coding to make it even more yours. Plus it's free and customizable. The only problem I have with blogs is that they are usually totally public, and if you choose to use one, any work you post that isnt published elsewhere is up for the taking, for whatever reason, by anyone who sees it. I use blogger as well, though I've also had some experience with wordpress. Wordpress is actually far more than a blog--it is a fairly robust content management system, but it takes more learning time to master it. Both are free, but you can customize more with wordpress, which may either be an advantage or disadvantage, depending on how you look at it. Hey Frank, I personally chose WordPress because I cannot say "blogger" without naseua rolling over me. It is pretty easy to use. Just play around with it for a while without intention to get it right the first time. You can always delete pages. It is better, I think, to experiment-- less frustrating than trying right away for a finished product. Good luck! I'm glad I went for Wordpress because there's stuff I have control over that I wouldn't on many other platforms. It's easy to set up your own categories, for instance. And I just used a plugin to make my blog dofollow, meaning that if you comment on it, your links will count to increase your own page's search engine ranking. It's been pretty easy to get running. Jennifer, Fred and Meriall, Thank you all for your thoughts. Fred - your caution is noted. It all gets very tricky, doesn't it with what counts as published and what doesn't. I'll take a look at both sites. I have little patience for programming (at the expense of posting or writing poetry, for example), but it might be fine. Frank, I'm a pathetically churlish Techno-Peasant, and..Lisa and Judy (et al) successfully coaxed ME through a first-run at setting up a blog (Blogger .com), and...it worked the first time, and ever since has been no problem at all! (Granted, once I set it up, I've not used it much, but...that's just my perpetual procrastination, not inaccessibility!) Follow their lead, and my example, and you'll do just fine! packrat, a lot of what you're experiencing is what I went through the first time. I posted, and then backed away from the whole blog thing, getting used to it at some deep level. A blog, she said, quivering. What on earth will I DO with it. The answer is, whatever you want. it's yours. Frank, I have a built-in resistance to posting ANY poetry of my own on my blog that could conceivably be published some day, by some incredibly perceptive person. A few people use their blogs as venues for work already out there, in a mag or published online, and then only after a decent interval has passed. In a way it's like keeping track in a very public fashion of your own progress as a writer. It's also a kind of spur to get moving, submit, submit. Then again you could turn it around and with the disclaimer, say, "if you want to publish this, please contact me." you never know. Afraid of the Dark | ||
