Dear Poetry Aficionados,

Poetry & Poets in Rags blog

We begin this week where we left off last Tuesday, when the controversial vote for Oxford's poetry chair was up in the air. Derek Walcott had dropped out of contention when a smear campaign was launched and dossiers were sent to many who would be voting. Ruth Padel stayed in the race even with calls that she drop out as well. We headline with the Telegraph's article on her, followed by The Times' article on Walcott, written by a woman who had sued him as a student. In Great Regulars, Sarah Crown, James Fenton, and Judith Fitzgerald, all in a row, have articles for us on this as well.

We have dozens more articles, with new subjects taken up, such as the poetry jam at the White House, and some themes run in pairs. There's a wisdom theme, for instance, as Adam Kirsch in Great Regulars addresses the question whether a poet can be a sage, and Frank Wilson addresses the questioner. But just as Kirsch looks at Chinese poetry, so does Carol Rumens. Both V Sundaram and findingDulcinea delve into Omar Khayyam. And these notes are just a hint of what's in this issue of Poetry & Poets in Rags.

Thanks for clicking in.

Yours,
Rus
