Robert Jordan, whose wildly popular "Wheel of time" series captured the imaginations of countless fans (such as myself), died Sunday of a rare blood disease. You can read more about it at (for instance) the New Zealand Herald. He was 58.

Now we'll never know what Rand's ultimate fate will be. :-( Jordan was working on book 12 of the WOT series.

"The Wheel of Time turns, and Ages come and pass, leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth comes again."
~ Robert Jordan, "The Wheel of Time"

Hi Michelle

I didn't know the late Robert Jordan's work but on your recommendation I will be pleased to seek it out. Thanks for the notification of his passing and for the plug for his work.

All the best

You're welcome!

The "Wheel of Time" is a romp that sometimes (especially in the latter books) plods along; nonetheless, the first few books got me hooked, and sheer curiosity kept me going for 10 years. It's a fantasy series reminiscent of stories like "The Lord of the Rings", except it involves humans who can tap into forces that are elemental and, for lack of a better word, magical. The "good" are not completely good, they are manipulative and flawed and powerful and secretive; at the same time, the "bad" are simply, mostly, ignorant, misguided, and generally trying to do the right thing with too little information. Some people are clearly and unmistakably informed by the Inquisitors; others are an amalgam of various Prophets/Messiahs/Miracle workers, yet the story never actually takes a religious turn.

Loads and loads of characters (a fact that some critics have considered a flaw), great detail in the description of the peoples of that world, complex, fully formed action - but don't expect a lot of swords, either. Not exactly. In it's way, although I can draw parallels with other works, the "Wheel of Time" series stands on its own. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I have.
