Have you ever electrocuted your poems? I have. They make perfect conductors, I can run the refrigerator off them. i enjoy planting my poems in window boxes. When summer comes, they bloom right along side the tomatoes. Have you ever rolled a poem? I do. I fill them with tobacco and then smoke them. Yum. Sometimes I use a hole puncher on my poems and punch holes in their pronouns. You know what's fun? Posing a poem in front of a mirror. Try it. Betcha won't know what you're writing about. Sometimes i bring them out into the sunlight, if they can see their shadow, I know the crocus will bloom. When my dog pees on my poems, I hang them on the clothesline and then off to the dry cleaner. An old poet's tale says if you can lure the devil with a horseshoe, he will promise to leave a poem at your door. Sometimes I play belly dance music and cajole my poems to dance. When they say they're too tired to continue, I tell them, Just one more spin.

I never write anything worth a damn when I TRY to write. It's like my muse (or that certain frame of mind) is in an inconsistent orbit. It gets to me when it gets to me. I can't do anything about it. Worrying and self-help gimmicks don't help at all.

have to agree with you, Dan. When the subconscious says, write, NOW I better have paper and pencil with me. When some well-meaning soul says, 'that would make a good poem, why don't you write about it" I nod and smile and find something else to discuss.

The best poems come all at once, in a line down the page, no stopping, no editing, no breathing. It's a scary, wondrous feeling.

Right, Judy. I know when I have a poem going, although 99% of the time there will be editing, sometimes lots of editing required, which is OK. First drafts of forced poems rarely last very long. I'll look at them and go "this is lame," then delete them from my life.

Lab Report to Dr. Tompsett concerning Mrs. Smith’s biopsy:

We never find conclusive diagnoses when we TRY to find them. It’s like our muse (or that certain frame of mind) is in an inconsistent orbit. Tell Mrs. Smith it’ll get to us when it gets to us. We can’t do anything about it. Worrying and self-help gimmicks don’t help at all.

Maybe Mrs. Smith's tumor is benign, maybe it isn’t. We’re still waiting on our muse. It's always gone when we need it. Maybe it's out there, revolving around Pluto. So, f&%k her if she isn’t alive when we finally figure it out.

Love,
