Hey all, Do you ever wander about with an idea for a creation in your head that haunts you? When I am in this state, I drive around in my car, at work, at home, cooking supper or whatever, going over it and over it in my mind chasing this thorn in my brain that haunts me. This is true for any creative outlet for me, a chapter idea for my novel or even a concept for a new book. A poem that needs to be said or felt or a painting or something I must craft. Even if no one was ever to read or see the creation, it has to happen. I figured I must have a few lose nuts, and wondered if anyone else runs into this. It's odd, but I can't not craft in words or ink or paint, and at times I can do little else until I set it free. Maybe it is insanity. To see me driving around radio off talking something out, I can see how people could think that. My wife once caught me pacing in my kitchen, an idea on fire in my brain and asked me what in the world I was doing. I laughed it off, and told her some nonsence but in truth I was in misery working out nail. I wonder sometimes if others get in this space. I am not perfect but the worlds not perfect, so we are a matching set. | ||

David--I think this is the curse of the creative. My husband learned long ago that when I got 'certain look in my eye' it meant I had to find a pen and paper or I would be completely useless. Basically, the house could burn down around my ears, but I had to write down what was in my head or feel like my brain would explode. Dearest David -- my mother used to say there is a fine line between genius and insanity. I believe all creative people walk that line always, often, or at least occasionally. So, you are definitely not alone. Thanks for sharing your experience. Love, M | ||

David -- Lord Byron kept a bear in his apartment during his youth. That's just one insane facet of his life. Read some bios of poets -- John Ashbery, Wallace Stevens, Anne Sexton -- this is just a short list of the more famous "crazy" poets. Even if you are wacky you're among friends and good company. | ||

David, I think you are nuts, going around with words in your head, spacing out for more than a few moments, stopping your car on the side of the interstate to write a line down, sneaking around at work to get on-line to see if anyone commented on your last post. David I call this passion and creativity, who needs negative labels? May we all continue with these wonderful urges!! I was on the plane coming home from SF this weekend and got a line in my head that kept repeating--I couldn't believe I didn't have a pen! I tried to hang onto the thought but then the second line came so I just poked the girl next to me and borrowed her pen until I could write it down. Well, I'd only label it as insanity if it hinders you from functioning properly, hijacking common sense and running off on its own. If it happened like when a car is about to hit you and you somehow choose to continue on writing down what's in your head than leap to safety at the risk of losing the thought, then that would be unfortunate and very negative. I, for one, have to give you kudos for being aware of and paying attention to worthwhile ideas. There have been times when I've pondered an interesting thought and didn't bother pursuing it further for lack of effort. Given the bad recall I have, there have already been a lot of forgotten thoughts I have gone through. Good for you and continue on with what you're doing. Just make sure it doesn't cripple you and render you unable to entertain things with higher priorities. | ||

Hi David, From time to time I get like that too. I will sometimes blank out while I am watching tv, then all of a sudden jump off the couch and make a run for my journal. The funny thing is that most of the time it is just a couple of words or an idea that blossoms into a piece later. The worse is when I have no paper and have to write on my hands, then I really get strange looks. Insanity is part of creation, that is what I have come to believe from an early age. what I wonder is about those people who have no ideas to write, no passion, nothing original, nothing leading to greater understanding of the philosophy they have been building. They either can't cook up something worth giving or they don't care about adding something of interest to others . What the !@#$%^& do they think thinking is ? I asked some friends of my ex- what is the purpose of life , to your mind. Response- porpise? poor piss? D.,You are as human should be- obviously,lotsa others have not yet discovered human development as a subject worth considering... cos. | ||

Hi Cos, Not having any passion to write, would indeed be quite tragic. I agree with you! More insanity in that, then any weird or crazy thing that we all do as writers!
