Laz--I use a personal wiki to organize my material for my novels. http://www.ljcohen.net/Tiddlywiki.htm I know several people who use ywriter: http://www.spacejock.com/yWriter.html The guy who wrote it is a writer and the software is free and 'bug-free' as far as I know. Hi Lisa- I saved the tiddlywiki page to my hard drive and I'll try to learn how to use it later. I'm not sure if I did it right. So I might be emailing you with questions. I'm writing a play from a novel based on a true story. My sister and I started this project this summer (we've been thinking of doing it for over a year). That's why it would be good to have a platform we can both work from. I looked at some programs that format to script, which would be good because I'd be looking that up as I went along! But right now I'm looking to get the basic work done- choose characters, scenes, dialogue. First I had to take the story apart, find the plot lines that I think are the most important, which is is mind numbingly boring work that turns the spigot off on my creativity. I decided I'm going to do that in small spurts so I don't burn out on the story. The story is from the mid 1700's about settlers to the Connecticut river valley. The main character is a woman and the story is about her struggle to raise her family in turbulent times. The book is: "Not Without Peril" by Marguerite Allis. It kind of obscure, it's only had three re-printings since 1941, all done for the historians at Fort No 4 Charlestown, NH where part of the story takes place. -Laz My Web Page | ||

It depends on whether you're looking for formatting tools, or story development tools. Formatting stories is fairly simple in the common Office products, but Final Draft is good for screenplays. For story development, I'm looking at Dramatica Pro, which asks you questions to help you flesh out story structure & character development. The demo is free, but you can't save your work.
