Dear Poetry Aficionados, Poetry & Poets in Rags Thanks for coming. You may find yourself seeing double and quintuple this week. Indeed, Linda Sue Grimes appears in Great Regulars with five items. Garrison Keillor has two. WH Auden is covered in Great Regulars by James Fenton, and again in another Guardian article by Katherine Bucknell. In our Poetic Obituaries section, please note two excellent articles on Whitney Balliett. But also note that Molly Ivins, who also died, is covered in Poetic Obituaries--and also in Great Regulars at PBS NewsHour. That latter article is one of my favorites of the week. Be sure, be sure, to click for the video (which is also in script). We headline, though, with big news from New Zealand, and travel around our small world of poetry from there. As usual, another resourceful issue, but where is the 3rd installment of Eagleton's series in The Times. Of course I have sought it out, but I was wondering why you didn't include it. No complaint, just curious  By the way, b/c of the October 2006 entry on your blog, I thought you might like to know, this evenung I attended one of the best readings I have ever witnessed before: Mark Doty. I would love to get long-winded about it, but time(one of Doty's themes by the way) won't let me. Just grateful time allowed me the 45 mins. to experience it. Best Regards, Michael (MV) | ||

Hi Michael, I'm with you. I went in search more than once, and posted of my frustration here at Frank Wilson's blog as a comment to a link to another Terry Eagleton article: I have frequently noted ... Hopefully, next week, all will be back to normal at The Times, and we will get installments 3 & 4. I have seen Mark Doty more than once, and had a chance to speak with him briefly at the Dodge. He was behind me as we left the big tent after his emotional reading of Heaven for Stanley, and we interacted a bit. Then at the booksigning I spoke with him again. What a terrific guy. And like you know now, he is not just another major poet when you go to see him. He is excellent, so much passion, intelligence, and connectedness. And I love his essays, how he approaches his subjects. I am so very much looking forward to his doing the IBPC annual for us. Just think, it will be maybe a bit over a month from now that we will be sending him the first and second placers from last year's monthly competitions. I believe David has already asked for photo and bio and such. Here's a poem you may have heard him read: Mark Doty Physically: "Heaven for Paul".
