Dear Poetry Fans,

Poetry & Poets in Rags

Our lead story is about the new--United States of America--National Children's Poet Laureate, sanctioned by the Poetry Foundation, as the governing body--which got me thinking about poetry being like boxing now. We could have many governing bodies, issuing poet laureate belts, that the poets could wear to readings--especially with the US National Children's Laureate. They could sell replica belts to the kids. We could have the American Academy of Poets belt, the Poetry Society of America's belt, the Library of Congress belt, and maybe one from the First Lady's office. At readings, fans could come with placards booing the bad poet laureates, and rooting on their faves. So, today's headliner could be a new dawn for poetry. And there's a neat poem in the newswire too.

Also, watch for the links this week, when an article sends you to an online library of poetry, a video, and the like. In many ways, there's a lot of content in this issue of P&P in Rags. I hope you enjoy it. And be sure to get into the Great Regulars. For instance, David Orr is back with another good one, Robert Pinsky is there as Ted Kooser is each week, and MR Zine is bringing us a translation of a Mahmoud Darwish poem. It's a powerful week for poetry in the news.

Yours,
Rus

Rus--It was such a treat meeting you at Dodge! Now we need to find a way to connect at some local venue. :-) Much easier than driving 5 hours every other year, since we both live near Boston! LOL.

Best,
ljc

I wanted to agree with Lisa, and thank both of you for the time of chatting with me. Lisa, I am still gloating about the shawl, and haha Andrew Motion, of course. Well, Barks and Bly were hoots as well)

But time to put a little locomotion in Andy's caboose.

haha

peace and love

Hi Lisa,

Last time I went down, it was on my own, and meeting no one I had known on line. It was great to meet you, and share events and conversation with you. We live 22 miles apart, had been at the same venues before, and finally met 270 miles away. Unreal.

Ah, and now that you have the picture up of Laurie and me, I realize I should have grabbed a camera and taken you two. I never think of it, because I've never been good at it.

Yours,
Rus

Hi Laurie,

Congrats! on your first place IBPC. Still I want you going for it while David Kirby is judging and commenting. I want to read what he'd have to say.

Great to meet you. And it was cool that Lisa had her camera ready: Dodge photos, redux. She has us in there with Coleman Barks and Robert Bly.

Fight like a middleweight: Hagler vs. Hearns.

Yours,
Rus

Thanks Rus and also thank you for alerting me to the fact I had won, as it was on Frugal but not on the winning board, About nor on DMR. As I told you, I have been up for 14 months running (on DMR) and am sort of relieved I'm not in it this month. Wish I could have scored for them. (they vote and another poem of mine was voted in). I'd like to repay them.

Someday I may go before Kirby. I appreciate the boxing reference, but I am a mere bantam....

Best Wishes

Laurie

Ps here's me and Barks (he actually thanked me for my poetry circle) my pride could not be contained.
