anyone use the blog at myspace? If so, are there any problems with retaining the rights of your work there? I heard about a clause in the myspace agreement that states they own anything you post under their blog/profile system. Who here uses it, and are you concerned at all? Thanks in advance. | ||

Valezar, First of all-- Welcome to Wild! Secondly, no, I do not use myspace but I post my work online. I hear writer's complain about someone stealing their work and I just can't wrap my head around the idea. That would be like saying someone else birthed my child, it just can't be done. Sure, sure, you can end up fighting for rights, for ownership, but, bottom line-- really, it is impossible for someone to have written anything you have written. I suppose some people take these things more seriously than I do. Those folks should write and post in as many places as possible, sort of a guaranteed date of conception, ya know? If it's good enough to steal, then you should have it published as soon as possible. Send it out via email or airmail just as soon as you feel confident enough to post it on Myspace... otherwise, consider it your work and take the chance that some fool will make an idiot of themselves if they ever try and call it theirs. lol if myspace wants to call something you've written theirs, that'll be a great lawsuit. And, if myspace is responsible for all content, I would imagine that they are in a lot of trouble, with a few of the recent (under age) problems I've heard about. I think you missunderstood, Karen. I am not worried about someone steeling my work. I'm a screenwriter by trade, if that was a worry of mine I would be in an asylum by now. I'm simply talking about the clause regarding proprietary ownership/distribution by myspace of anythig posted in their system. Not a case of stealing, but immediate ownership (as clarified for me in the clause posted above, thanks btw). By the way,Gary, what blog do you suggest? | ||

Expert? Doubt that, but I do keep a blog on blogger and have been happy with it. Pretty user friendly and easy to update. I know a lot of writers who use livejournal because of the ability to keep the blog private and define a circle of friends who can see it. Those are the major free blogs. Valezar, Go ahead and post your poems on a blog. I use Xanga myself. However, when a poem is on submission or is currently or recently published on-line or in hardcopy, I strongly suggest you take the poem off your blog. Many editors routinely google every poem they receive, and if it comes up anywhere besides a workshop like this, it may reduce or eliminate your chances of acceptance. After all, some degree of exclusivity of access to a poem is one of the things that gives a journal value. Best, Fred | ||
