Dear Poetry Fans,

Poetry & Poets in Rags

The persistence of being a poet. This is the theme this week. Most of our articles show poets in their poetry vocations, and/or show what it takes to be one--or rather, show what it takes when one is one. As I read the articles, I see myself in different aspects of their lives, and am encouraged. I hope you are too. Along these lines, our very timely and historic headliner is perfect, and, in a tough way, so is our back page story perfect.

The Oregonian now has a third series in our "Great Regulars" section. You'll find David Biespiel's monthly column, but then the new one further down. It's called "Currents--Poetry". There are two poems in it, with a call to readers for more. I e-mailed James Holman and asked if this was open to anyone and he responded, in part with this:

"Actually, the Currents page appears only in the Southwest Weekly, which goes to Oregonian readers in Tigard, Tualatin, Sherwood, King City and Yamhill County. So we're looking specifically for contributions from readers who live in those areas.

"But the Sunday O! section has a Poetry section that publishes works by Oregon and Northwest residents. You might check with Beverly Close in the Books section about submitting poems for that feature."

Also in "Great Regulars", we have two weeks of Ted Kooser's American Life in Poetry. This is because ALP used to, early in a given week, only have a current URL that would always link to whichever poem happened to be current, whenever you'd click in. They archive their poems by putting the article's number in the URL. They've done this already for Column 045. I hope this speedy updating continues for us, otherwise we'll go back to lagging.

Yours,
Rus
