Hi Gary Is it the Greatest or just the Latest?  I have not seen the movie, only the previews. I continue to be disappointed that computer-generated figures have a herky jerky quality that tells you it is fake, a dead giveaway. So in that sense despite the millions spent by Peter Jackson's production company--and the Kong on skyscraper sequence with the biplanes does look spectacular, better than other versions -- the actual movements of the ape monster may not be any more lifelike than the 1933 black and white with Fay Wray. even the 1997 TITANIC movie was cyber-generated; but I didn't know it until someone informed me. Ebert calls Kong possibly one of the best movies of the year. No @ the very top of my must-see list, but on the list. After all: "It was beauty killed the beast."  Michael (MV) | ||

Have not seen it yet but it's on my short list right after Narnia. Computer generated flicks are only getting better with each passing year - i.e., Titanic, Troy, Gladiator, etc., and all excellent, IMO. Then again, I still like watching "It's a Wonderful Life" every Christmas. To each his own, Gardawg. Go see Kong for yourself and pay the critics no never mind. Some of the best music I have ever heard (again, IMO) was critiqued as "bad" by Rolling Stone reviewers. Go figure. Same with movies, I believe. Whatever floats (or sinks, as in the case of Titanic) your boat. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and it always will be. D | ||

Dane, the list of flicks/books/etc I like that the critics did not is longer than where we match. Mostly interested in Wilder's view, cause after all, they are smarter than most critters. Gary, Troy is a true love story in every sense of the word. Yeah, I know, probably not enough violence for your personal taste. All things equal though, I related well to Brad Pitt. After all, he was shot in the foot toward the end of it. *smile* If it's ugly you want, try "King Authur." A new twist to the original story telling. Now showing on HBO near a television in your neighborhood. Oh, and let's not forget "Rome" (also on HBO). Without computer generated graphics, I believe neither could have been made with as much realism. Both of them are / were monster productions, imo, and worthy of a peek. D | ||

I thought Troy was poorly acted, but it is better than Alexander. Speaking of which CGI does wonders for battle scenes. King Arthur, did not care for the story or movie. I prefer TH White. Either Camelot or Sword in the Stone. My wife love tghe Gere version, but I find it too much of a departure from a good story. Rome - okay. Good acting, but the violence sometimes seems excessive. Deadwood better imo. One thing I do like about Rome is where the next year will go. Octavian's story after he disposes of Anthony seldom told. Afther that though is any thing better than I Claudis. Gladitor great flick, much better than The Rise and Fall etc. Speaking of Crowe, think of what CGI did for Master and Commander. Though again key parts of the story missing. Gary, Happy to know we're on the same thought wave regarding movies. Deadwood is one of my favorites also - a little heavy on the vulgarity side, but what the F, eh? Yes, the acting in Troy leaved much to be desired but the battle scenes were terrific. All the same, since I didn't live in that time period (not that I'm aware of anyway) I have no idea how they acted or sounded like when they spoke. For me, the best departure for escape is being able to immerse one's self into the moment of the immediate fantasy - and that includes Harry Potter, Star Wars, The Little Mermaid and The Lion King. I'm not as critical these days of anything. If it doesn't require more of me than my short attention span of a few hours, and it allows me to escape realiity, well, in all probability, I'll enjoy it without regard if it was true to the book or not. Gladiator? I seldom "buy" movies but that one is in my collection. One of the last purchased, btw. Kong might be the next. D | ||

How they spoke is interesting. Consider the theatrics of old movies. And I have a collection of spoken poetry. Very dramatic into the 50's. I think movies need something to make them special. One reason Godfather I and II work is the language. GFIII would work but they went cheap on the supporting actors, most second rate. Dick Tracy works when the bad guys do special language - Pacino and Hoffman. To a degree movies need to be larger than everyday. Kong is and then some. Smiles. I like what you've said and couldn't agree more, but again, I'm easier to please than most. Hopeless and hopeful all rolled into one. The bitter pill for me, if there is such a thing, is having to pay that large entrance fee (and popcorn is NOT included). | ||

My daughter saw this twice and she says it was the best movie she's seen since LOTR. She was scared by the Island scenes and cried through the ending. Hubby went with her and had nightmares that night. She said Jack Black was exceptional which shocked me because I've only seen him do comedy. She said the female lead was exceptional as well. saw it tonight. awesome. no jerking. totally involving. Worth the watch and the ticket on a screen big enough to hold the beast. it was father in laws birthday and we took him to see it. Saw it Saturday, not perfect but till 5 stars. Downside - length of part 1 jerky camera action quesy bug scene, 33 did right to cut it Jimmy shooting sun and only hitting bugs Upside - Kong as aged, lonely ape Jack as screen writer Watts acting and character back to 33 vice modern era act 3 in its entirety Better than any other fantasy flick, except maybe Aliens, not as good as any flick, Godfather comes to mind.
